Yeshivat 鶹 commemorated Yom HaShoah on April 22, with a moving program, dedicated in memory of Fela and Abraham Kolat, z”l. The program was , and included moving personal narratives, readings and divrei Torah.

“A question often posed is, how do you respond to such images?” said Assistant Principal Rabbi David Goldfischer at the program’s conclusion. “How do you respond to such evil? As Jews, we respond with prayer…We also commit ourselves to living lives of love, lives of goodness and kindness, being there for our immediate community, the broader community and, of course, the world community, so that such evil is never replicated ever again. That is part of our responsibility. Our responsibility to remember and to do something on behalf of the six million, and to be people who continue their stories.”

cnn-2-basketballNow that the winter sports season is in full swing at 鶹, so, too, is the Cougar Nation Network (CNN), our student-driven live streaming camera crew, which frequently live streams athletic games available for our 鶹 family to watch on . Members of the CNN not only live stream games but also interview athletes, make commercials for the broadcasts, graphics to complement the games and the CNN website, and more. A Cougar Nation Networking app is forthcoming.

“It’s amazing how its evolved back from February last year, it’s grown from the idea of a few students to an active club with 20 members,” said Aharon Trauirg ’17. “The club has brought in speakers, taken an amazing trip, and we get so much hands-on experience on a regular basis. This is such a unique club opportunity, and I know my peers and I are grateful to 鶹 for allowing us to take this idea and run with it.”

Most recently, the live streaming club visited the set of We Need to Talk, a professional sports talk show on the CBS Sports Network.cougar-nation-6

“鶹 is proud of our students for pursuing their passion, finding what makes them unique, and taking it to a truly impressive level,” said Rabbi Eli Ciner, principal.

The Cougar Nation Network is only one of our many co-curricular clubs, many of which are student-initiated and cover the gamut of interests, hobbies and professional aspirations from sewing and debate to fencing and ocean preservation.

Daniel KoenigDaniel Koenig ’17 spent the past few weeks at at its summer STEM program, an intensive six-week experience for high school students planning to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Rising juniors and seniors get hands-on lessons in engineering design and problem-solving; work closely with esteemed Cooper Union faculty; and participate in group projects ranging from robotics, digital fabrication, computer programming and app development, and more.

“The Cooper Union summer STEM program was not only an amazing educational experience, but also an enjoyable one,” said Daniel. “Over the course of six weeks I learned how to make an app, collaborate effectively with teammates, and succeed in the business aspect of engineering. The app that my team and I created is called ‘Travel Safely,’ and it’s an aggregator of every country’s vital safety information that travelers needs before going to a different country. Key safety factors such as tap water quality, crime levels, vaccines needed, and many more are all available on this app. Hopefully we will be able to release it to the App Store soon.”

FlipCon ConferenceSeveral 鶹 science educators worked on honing their teaching craft earlier last week by attending the conference in New Paltz, NY.

Teachers learned how to create flipped classroom videos to continue helping students become independent learners.

“Educational technologies such as online videos or teacher prepared videos are used to deliver content outside of the classroom,” said Dr. Furman, Chair of 鶹’s Science Department. “Students are assigned these videos to watch as homework, and students who have difficulty with certain concepts are able to watch the video multiple times if needed. By laying a foundation for the students at home , this allows for better use of instructional time where topics can be explored in greater depth.”
Dr. Furman continued, “The theory behind the flipped classroom is to have the students be independent learners and take responsibility for acquiring the basic and most concrete concepts on their own. The classroom can then became a place where the teachers are available to work with students on the more difficult and challenging material.”

Gallery Walk 20Last week, juniors in Morah Racheli’s Navi class presented a grand gallery walk for faculty and students that showcased their culminating projects for their unit on Sefer Zechariah. Students were tasked with examining one of the prophecies from the series of visions Zecharia experienced during the time of the building of the second Beit Hamikdash. Students had to explain the vision according to three meforshim – a rishon, an acharon, and a modern bible scholar – and make their own source sheets, as well as create a visual depiction of the vision to be presented to the class.

Students were extremely creative and brought Zechariah’s visions to life through art, clay, painting, 3D printing, stop motion video, and multi-media in a variety of innovative ways. Students also explained their artwork to the visitors of the gallery walk and discussed why that particular vision was canonized, how the message of that vision was meant for the Jews of that time and how it might apply to our lives today. Rabbi Pittinsky blogged about the project – and another example of project-based learning – .

“Project-based learning, like this example from my classroom, is the best way for students to tap into their ability to self-introspect, and inspiresthem to think of what they’re researching and how it applies to them and their lives today,” said Morah Racheli. “This project comes at a critical time in juniors’lives, when they are getting ready to go to Israel and college. I’m in awe of how creative my students are and the beautiful projects they create.”
